Bargylus Grand Vin de Syrie Rouge 2008

A blend of 60% Syrah, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot. Bordeaux consultant legend Stephan Derenoncourt is a consultant here. The vineyard lies at 900 meters above sea level on the top of a mountain. Hand picked, then sorted twice in the winery. Fermentation in stainless steel and aging in barriques for 14 months. One third new wood and one third each second and third occupancy. A highly concentrated, very intense nose. Fig, date, plum, black cherry and cassis, all in a highly ripe, lush form. Fruity, powerful, pushing and spicy at the same time. Cinnamon, clove, pepper, a little gingerbread and spice bread. A sweet overwhelm in the mouth, here too the most abundant black cherry, fig and date, blueberry, powerful, velvety and rich dominate. Warm and spicy in this dark-fruity charm offensive, lush but very ripe tannins, sweet gingerbread spices, allspice, graphite mineral, also somewhat earthy and with a loamy, clayey association. The glycerine is noticeable on the finish, adds a warming element and further contributes to the richness and concentration of this lush, powerful mountain wine. This spicy, tightly woven fruit is a little reminiscent of wines from the Rhône or Languedoc. This is not for the faint-hearted and certainly not the most elegant wine, but very impressive, mouth-filling and intense. All controls to the right. A power wine from the high locations in Syria.
